Traditional disinfection & sanitisation is highly effective but short-acting; a deep cleaning’s anti-germ activity will last literally only an hour or two and conventional sanitization via spraying or nebulizing will last for several hours, then microbes will take over again… Hence, the frequency of disinfection and cleaning has to be either very high or is far from inhibiting re-contamination. This so-called “hygiene-gap” is inhibiting efficient infection control.
A solution to this problem is an antimicrobial surface coating of the entire space – applied once, and acting for at least 2 years. This is being achieved through the application of Nano-sized particles of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2), resulting in a thin transparent layer on all indoor-surfaces.
TiO2 is well studied and known for many years in food processing technology. There is a wealth of experimental evidence concerning the efficacy of the biocidal action associated with the TiO2 photocatalytic reaction. Usually, UV- or near UV-light triggers the photo-catalytic effect of this semiconductor mineral, whereby electrons are being freed from the crystal structure, resulting in a surface of positively charged “holes” and semi-free negatively charged electrons. The resulting reactions create strong radicals, which break down organic particles, close to the surface. This has a devastating effect on bacteria, viruses, or mould 1 . This process is also known as slow and steady bio-decontamination. It is steady because it is continuously preventing re-colonisation for a period of 24 months or longer, all the time: 365 days a year/7 days a week/24 hours protection. TiO2 works as a catalyst, i.e. it will not be used up over time, but remains active. In fact, the only limiting factor is wear and tear of the coated surface.
